The recent rains and warm weather have delayed the onset of winter conditions on Mount Rose. Snow started to appear on the southern portion of the loop at 3500 feet, well above Horse Camp. It stayed shallow and sparse to the ridgeline below the summit, then disappeared entirely on the open area at the top. Microspikes were helpful through the snowy section but not essential.
Gray Jays were especially assertive during our lunch break. One swooped onto my hand and played tug-of-war with my food (but I won).
We returned by the northern loop and found deeper snow along the ridge. Even so, the tops of leafless huckleberry protruded through. Once we started downhill through the trees, the snow disappeared quickly. This is my favorite section, and today the forest had a damp, lush, springtime look.
Despite the ambivalent conditions, the nice weather and spectacular views made it a rewarding trip. It was quiet, too. We saw just four people all day. My three hiking buddies and I logged 6.25 miles with 3450 feet of climbing.

Parking lot just half full by 11am. Very beautiful trail with great views. No snow; scant ice. Enjoyed seeing different mushrooms along the way. Canada jays were overly friendly at the summit so wouldn’t recommend letting your guard down if taking in the summit views while snacking.

3 guys and a dog started at 0800 and finished back to the lot at around 1230. Trail was in good condition and only a touch of snow left on the backside of the peak when traveling in the clockwise direction. Might not have the best end views, but there are quite a few beautiful views of the scenery throughout the hike.
