Beware of: snow, trail conditions

Tho completely snowed in the drive was nice and it made for a fun day in the snow. You can slide down to the lake. The weather was great tho we burned with sunblock on. All in all we had fun. We will try later in the summer in hopes the snow is gone.

I just wanted to write a quick trip report for Naches Peak Loop trail at Tipsoo Lake. On Sunday, the 11th of June we ventured out to hike the loop trail with our two small children. When we reached the trailhead we were surprised to see snow, everywhere. The snow pack is still very much there. The trail was non-existent and people were skiing (which looked like a lot of fun). I just wanted to save someone a trip by writing this if they planned to go and hike the loop anytime soon. The WA Hikers and Climbers FB page clued me in that this particular hike is still impassable this time of year (unless it is a drought year) and the best time to hike Naches Peak Loop is end of July / early August. We will venture out there again around then and hopefully see the wonderful fields of wildflowers.

Temperature was 54 degrees and slightly overcast.

The park was closed from this access point. Very disappointing and frustrating. Nothing on the internet or websites warned of closing.

This was a scrambling trip to the summit of Tahtlum Peak. We started out on the PCT/Naches Peak Loop from Chinook Pass at about 09:30. There were only a couple of other cars in the lot when we arrived, and the weather was pretty nasty with rain and strong winds. The road was fine all the way up, but the trail was mostly snow covered right from the get-go (elevation about 5,400 ft). As we progressed, we found less snow coverage and several places where mud and running water on the trail instead. Still, no major obstacles on the trail so the going was pretty easy. The trail wasn't steep enough to break out microspikes and the snow wasn't deep enough for snowshoes. Poles were helpful, though. We left the trail at about 5,840 ft to head up a ridge towards Tahtlum Peak. As the route got steeper we actually saw less snow. There are some areas with a lot of loose rock to watch out for, but it was not a terribly difficult scramble. Also, we lucked out with improving weather conditions throughout the day and were treated to some blue skies and great views along the way. Another great day in the mountains :-)

Went on this trail on Friday. Snow covered most of the trail but it was packed down. Went only with a good pair of hiking boots and walking sticks. Views were awesome.
