What a lovely hike! On the way out, the tide was low. We saw eagles, herons, swallows, and bunnies. The views from the boardwalk are really special. On the way back, the water had come in and the scenery was a lot different! We saw some seals sunbathing with their babies, which was super cool. The visitor center is great and the restrooms were clean and stocked.

A rather perfect day to do this hike- partially sunny and cloudy with a nice breeze. Once on the boardwalk it’s all exposed so unless you have an amazing sun hat it’s preferable to go on a somewhat cloudy day at least. Saw so many birds (it’s a birders delight out here!) . At least 6 eagles just chillin down on the ground with us in good sight. A fellow hiker pointed out a fledgling eagle in a nest way up on the tree tops. Tide was low, look for all the little crabs hiding from the seagulls! This place is really a delight. Young ones will love it!

It was an easy hike. We took our 7 month old in her carrier. The tide was out which made half of the hike a hike over a lot of mud. I recommend timing your hike here with the tide. We saw a lot of different birds including 4 bald eagles.

We spent 3 hours at the refuge today hoping to see the barn owl and bittern that were seen last Wednesday by the birders on their weekly bird walk. Neither were seen, but we did see 3 Wilson's Snipe which is a species we had not seen before! They were in the pond area behind the Visitor's Center. Northern shovelers, Northern pintails, mallards, gadwalls, 2 herons and many cackling geese were some of the other birds seen. The cackling geese were quite verbose and several groups flew in to join those on the ground. The wind made for a cold walk on the dike!
