My husband, dog and I headed out at about ten in the morning. It was snowing this morning so we were the first to make tracks. The only other people on the trail were a couple and photographer taking engagement pictures at the swinging bridge. The conifers were covered with snow and the river was high. Great quick trip when you need to get out, but don't quite have the time or inclination to drive far.

I got my holiday weekend off to an excellent start with a short hike through the snow along the Spokane River.  I really enjoy exploring some of my favorite local trails in the winter months as the snow or frost dramatically changes the landscape. There was a thin layer of ice along much of the trail, but a good pair of boots, hiking poles, and a fresh layer of snow made for a safe and enjoyable trip.  I got a late start and had to turn around shortly after the Devil's Toe Nail, but you can easily extend this further along the river for a longer loop.  I like to hike along the river when there is ice or snow on the trail as there is relatively little elevation change, and less of a chance for an unexpected slip while hiking downhill.  The trail was easy to locate despite the snow, but it's always a good idea to bring a map.  I use the Riverside State Park Multi-Use Trail Map, which also includes hiking trails at Deep Creek Canyon and the Indian Painted Rocks.  I think I picked up my copy at the Park Kiosk a few years ago, but they also sell it at REI.

After visiting Mount Spokane on work business, I headed to Riverside to camp. The next morning, I woke up and wandered around the Bowl and Pitcher area with my morning tea (I forgot coffee...) The trails here are very well-developed and maintained. Not much to report there, but the morning fog and chill in the air made the wood of the swinging bridge slippery. Watch your step! It was great to learn more about the legends of this area, too! I should have known, but the name Bowl and Pitcher refer to two specific rocks here. See if you can spot them both...
