Tried this with a Boston terrier and decided not to go up the rocky path based on rock size. Still a beautiful day and good views from lower level.

Hiked with our 4 year old border collie - GORGEOUS views, and very few people. Did both the lower and upper hikes. Will absolutely be coming back!

Trails in excellent condition and wildflowers were starting to bloom! Definitely recommend the right side of the plateau (when you arrive at the top) if you are short on time. Views are amazing!

What a beautiful day! In a week or two the whole area will be green and it will be even better. Right now all the waterfalls in the area are going too so it's a nice drive along the river. The trail getting up on top of the rock is a bit dicey in some spots, it would be a good idea to bring trekking poles. Going down is worse than coming up, I am fit and have good balance and even I was on all fours hugging rocks on the way down just so I didn't fall. Plenty of wildlife, I saw a marmot, several hawks, and two herds of deer on top of the rock. On your way out of the park if you turn left on the highway and go down the road just a little bit there's a pull-out on the right where you can get right under several waterfalls (if they're still running.)

I've been wanting to get back to Steamboat Rock and that last report with the frozen lake was enough to make me face the long drive. The lake was frozen around Steamboat Rock but it was melted around the shore. With 45+ degree weather, it won't stay frozen for long. The hike up to the plateau seemed a little easier than the last time I was there. The ground was damp enough that your boots could get some traction. There's no snow to speak of up top. A few patches here and there but nothing you have to walk through. There were tons of hoof prints, big and small, and other evidence of deer or maybe sheep. It seems like they like to go right to the edge for a peek. We looked everywhere but they remained elusive. We did find a flock of birds. I should say, a flock of birds found us. They made so much noise when they took off it inspired a hearty discussion of the sympathetic nervous system and myocardial infarction. As expected the hike down was harder than the hike up. My hiking pole was helpful. My daughter just scooted down the steep spots. I took hiway 2 home and wow! The rolling hills west of Coulee City were out of this world beautiful covered in snow. So pretty!!
