We settled on this hike after we found out that we couldn’t cross the dam. The bridge is out over the creek but we found a log to cross on. The creek is shallow so it would be easy to walk across if you don’t mind wet feet. There were a few trees down over the trail but it was easy to get past them. The views from the top were very rewarding.

No bathrooms, parking is marked off the highway by the Colonial creek campground. I arrived at 7:45 and was the second car in the lot.
Washout in the camp makes the first section of trail a little hard to follow.
Only tricky thing about this trail is the creek crossing at the beginning, there are several good logs to use to cross and rock hopping is very easy a little ways up stream.
I love this trail, the mossy rocks are so pretty and there are so many fun peekaboo views most of the way.
At the top there are two main viewpoints, the north facing view that overlooks the lake and Jack mountain, and the west facing view with the better view of the lake and views of Davis and Pyramid peak.
The trail is in great condition, no snow and spring is clearly here!
Had the trail to myself, didn't see the other hikers. A few others showed up as I was leaving.

Just a little snow near the campground but otherwise the trail was snow and mud free. To cross the stream (as metal bridge removed for the winter) go upstream 150+ feet. Just follow the footpath. Look for either a log crossing you are comfortable with or rock hop once it narrows. Easy to pick up the trail on the other side.

FYI the “bigger” log to cross the stream is washed out. There’s a new smaller fallen tree that some could use to cross, but too sketchy for me.
Colonial creek campground parking lot was also washed out, but it looks like NPS is trying to clean it up this week.
