Headed out to Tolmie peak today, I read the road conditions were good on the 4th of July trip report. I got 4 of 11 miles down the gravel until I said 8 miles of washboard was enough and turned around. 22 miles of washboard road isn't worth tolmie peak to me. So the road isn't in exactly in good condition like stated. Totally doable as other cars were, just wasn't worth vibrating my car apart for 45 minutes.

The last 15 miles is a dirt, washboard ish road with potholes. I would not reccommend going without a bigger car and higher clearance! It was a long slog even in a Toyota Tacoma. However, it was worth it! We arrived at the trailhead around 9 with a few cars already at the trailhead. The trail has some incline and decline, so the way down is not all decline. We had perfect weather and the mountain was so gorgeous! There were 5 or so groups at the top already. We made it up in around an hour and ten minutes. I wanted to stay forever with the mountain and lake view! Highly reccommend if you have a car you're willing to bump around in 😊

This is an incredible hike! I've only lived in the area for two months, but this is my favorite my by far. Most of the hikes I have been on have consisted of hiking straight up a mountain side and then straight down. This one has everything! Flat, wandering trails through wildflowers, some inclines, incredible views, lakes, streams, mountain views (specifically, incredible views of Mt. Rainier). And as a bonus, it isn't terribly arduous! Glad to have come out here, and I can't wait to bring my mom when she visits. Be prepared for the last 15 miles of the drive to the trial head though - it is a dirt/gravel path up an incline. My VW Golf did just fine, but I felt a little out of my league. Totally worth it though! I felt like singing "the hills are alive with the sound of music" the whole time.

My group got to the trailhead at 9am and there were around 6 or 7 cars there. When we left at around 2, there were probably 20-30 cars (so try to get there early to beat the afternoon crowds!) Tolmie Peak is a beautiful hike with a spectacular views of Rainier and Eunice Lake below. It was 5.6 miles round trip. A great hike to bring people from out-of-town to show off the PNW! A few tips: 1) The national park fee is $25. Make sure to have exact cash to leave in an envelope at the station (or display your National Park Pass if you have that already). 2) The last 17 miles of the drive to the trailhead is a gravel road. While well-maintained, it still adds extra time to the drive so account for that. 3) Bring bug spray!
