What a great hike! The views of Rainier are huge and in-your-face, and they start on the drive in miles before you even reach the trailhead.
For the roads, the last 15 miles of the drive are on forest service roads. They are in great condition, and any sedan could make the drive. That being said, they are still forest service roads, and a high clearance vehicle will make it much more comfortable.
We arrived at the trailhead at 5:50pm and started at 6. The trail is in great shape! You immediately descend from the trailhead with Mowich Lake to your right, and spend the first mile or so going down before you head up. While WTA says 7.5 miles, according to trailhead signage the round trip is only 5.6 miles, which felt accurate although we weren't measuring. Once you reach Eunice lake some intermittent snow patches are present. They were quite slushy with such a late start but still easy to cross with just boots and poles (could easily be done without poles as well). Lots of mud in these areas as well. No bugs at the time we were there, which was nice.
From Eunice Lake you can see the lookout tower high up on the ridge on the opposite side of the lake, but it looks farther than it actually is. It is just a short mile from the lake to the lookout, with only a few switchbacks and very manageable elevation. Was extremely surprised at how quick and easy it was! At a moderate pace we made it from trailhead to the lookout in 90 minutes, even with a prolonged pee break thrown in there.
From the lookout, there is an amazing little ridgeline traverse you can continue down for a little ways. I am a sucker for ridgelines, so this was my favorite part. Standing in one spot we could see Glacier Peak, Baker, and the entire Olympic range to one side, and Rainier/St Helens to the other, all with a beautiful blanket of clouds surrounding them. Many wildflowers starting to bloom. It was stunning!
We stayed up there for sunset and hiked down in the dark with our headlamps, still easy to navigate without an issue. Will definitely be doing this one again!
