Almost all the trees were bare but the few with yellow leaves were very pretty. Very pleasant hike. Stream crossing was easy.

Today we hiked in Umtanum Creek Canyon. Although many of the trees and shrubs had lost their leaves, many of the aspen and cottonwoods were still dressed in their fall colors. This is a beautiful canyon with its basalt cliffs, Umtanum Creek with evidence of beaver activity in many areas and beautiful fall colors! We hiked to the second creek crossing and then returned to the TH. The creeks were easily crossed today.

Absolutely amazing Fall hike today. It was such a beautiful day. The colors were just amazing. They are not at peak yet so get out and enjoy soon. This was our first trip the trail description is right on. We lost it a few times but it was easy to find again. We had an awesome day... don’t forget your camera.

Driving directions spot on. Google maps had us take exit 109 off I90 but you end up on the same road to the rec area. Arrived about noon on a beautiful blue sky day. Parking lot was half full. Called the Bureau of Land Management and confirmed the America the Beautiful pass is valid at this trailhead. Otherwise, $5 day use fee. Was not able to find a map of the trail (I always look for the free ones) so I printed the information from the WTA page since prior posts said the trail was confusing. Following the directions for WTA was able to easily find the trail for Utanum Creek Canyon. Over the bridge. Under the rail road tracked, turn left and along the railroad tracks (stay off them) and then stay to the right when you arrive at the trailhead. BEGINNING OF DEER HUNTING SEASON. Heard a few shots intially. Saw a couple hunters in orange on the hillside. Two in our group of 3 were wearing bright colors and we stopped to talk to a couple leaving. They said most of the hunters were taking a lunch break. Just be cautious out there! Beautiful fall colors. Prior posts do not lie! Lots of small trails to head off on. We lucked out and joined a pair of ladies. One who knew the trails well. She allowed us to tag along with her for several miles. We decided to turnaround and promptly got lost. haha We knew we had to head down the canyon and after several misleading trails ended up back at the trailhead. Enjoyed this hike on a sunny day.

Gorgeous day out in Yakima Canyon. Fall foliage is beginning and although we had a windy end to the hike, it was the perfect way to spend the afternoon! Trail somewhat overgrown, but manageable.
