I have been on Umtanum Ridge Crest trail nearby but not this one. A new sturdy bridge is in place. Lots of people, fisherman/women, rafters, boaters, kayakers, etc. were enjoying Yakima River.
Immediately after crossing under the railroad trestle, there were several beautiful birds flying around including lazuli buntings, yellow chats and so many more. The trail is mostly flat and not always easy to find. It's quite overgrown. The two creek crossings within the first 2 miles are easy to cross. Looking at the surrounding canyon walls you see that bright greenery is replacing the fire damaged plants and grasses. Along the trail there are scattered wildflowers. I saw a few blooming bushes of milkweed which I haven't seen much of.
The start of the scarred alder and the ash filled ground brings the realization of the fire that occurred here. I walked a short distance further after reaching the alder but stopped as my legs were getting scratched up from spiky bushes. Burned tree limbs were poking out in every direction. I suggest you wear long pants for this hike. I was a bit disappointed to turn around. The terrain was changing, the walls of the canyon getting narrower and I wanted to see more. I only walked about 2-1/4 miles but there was much to enjoy. Nature is recovering nicely after the fire.

The parking lot at the start of the trail and the suspension bridge across the Yakima River were closed due to active construction on the bridge. I came on a weekday; maybe they allow bridge passage when they are not working on it?

We tried to hike on Sunday and the trail was definitely closed. Bummer. We parked in a pull-out down the canyon and attempted to walk in, but the gate to the foot bridge is locked, with no way to cross. We had to go somewhere else. Maybe they close the gate on the weekends only, given the other recent reports which said it was open?
