The overlook is open and the views are definitely worth a visit. I’ve lived here for many years and driven highway 20 multiple times but have never stopped at the overlook until today, to share the views with my parents. It was well worth the visit.
There are multiple well stocked bathrooms available as well.

The access road is gated. It's only a 1 mile walk to the overlook, plus any wandering you do on the small loop. The road is snowfree as is most of the parking lot. There are a few patches of snow between the parking lot and the overlook. The overlook is snowfree.
This Tuesday at 2 pm the number of cars varied between 2 and 5. There's room for perhaps 15-20 cars. Two of the three toilets at the parking lot (1 mile in) were open and with TP.
Clouds came and went over the surrounding peaks, and there was some light snow (not accumulating) as I was leaving.

Midweek hiking is the best way to join in on larch madness. Arrived to the trailhead at 8:30 am and there were still plenty of open spots. The bathroom has been freshly cleaned and restocked.
The hike up is lovely with views to the North along the way. The larches are on full golden splendor and all the snow that fell has melted, though I'm sure it will not be long before it returns.
Washington Pass Overlook is just around the corner and definitely worth the stop.

Heather/Maple Pass and Blue Lake were an absolute mess today. No doubt they were absolutely gorgeous but likely you’ld be looking over someone’s shoulder to see that golden larch.
Both hikes had full parking lots and cars stretching upwards of a mile along side highway twenty. There are quite literally 400 cars along the road. Walking along this 60mph roadway is dangerous, so please be careful. Three people were hospitalized last week at HMP trailhead when someone made a u-turn in the road and was struck broadside.
Washington Pass overlook had one dozen cars in the lot, fantastic views, and no crowds.
Please consider the dozens of other larch hikes throughout the Cascades. Trees are just starting to peak at higher elevations. Twisp, Wa is a great town to base out of with easy proximity to many larch hikes.
Pro-Tip: the traffic going back to the west side on hwy 20 is likely to be terrible. Try stopping in Darrington, they have a family friendly brewpub with great pizzas.
