Getting there & trialhead

First and foremost: do not rely on GPS. Read WTA instructions and follow them. GPS will bring you to a private driveway, and a “no trail access sign” hints owners are not very happy about someone being yet another lost hiker.

The trailhead parks 13 cars in stalls plus maybe a couple more outside them if you’re courteous enough. There is a portable toilet at the trailhead.

Hike

Hiked Whittaker trail up and Gombu trail down, clocking in 4 mi in 1.5 hrs. Surprisingly steep. Soft in places, but no real mud. No snow besides a couple sad trailside patches at the top. No real views, but a great workout - the trail system seems to be popular with mountain runners.

Great and unexpectedly dry hike today on the Wilderness Peak Loop.

Overall the trail is in really good condition, only a bit of mud, didn't see any signs of spring yet. No blowdowns around the loop.

One thing I did want to mention is that there was a bit of snow at the high point of the loop where the junction is and at wilderness peak. It's a very short distance and I'm sure it will melt in a day or two of warm weather, but I was surprised so wanted to let others know. We did fine with just poles. I had my microspikes since they live in my pack in winter and spring but didn't need them.

Lovely hike, after a mile or so it is easy to forget you are even near a city.  The road noise disappears and you are fully immersed in the forest sounds and sights.
I love that I can drive a short distance from home for an urban hike that lets me escape the noise and bustle of city life, and gain all the benefits of some time in nature!

The parking lot was pretty full at 9am on a Saturday. Lots of broken glass on the ground, so be careful with kids and pets. The trail was a bit muddy, but otherwise in great shape. We saw quite a few people on this loop, and it was very popular with trail runners. When we got back to the parking lot around 1:30, there were cars parked along the road. No evidence of new break-ins that we could see.
