While many hikers are still thinking about their Memorial Day weekend, at Washington Trails Association we are looking forward to National Trails Day on Saturday.

This year's annual event is being held this Saturday, June 2. It's coordinated by the American Hiking Society as a celebration of hiking trails and the hard work that goes into creating and maintaining them.

At WTA, we take that mission to heart. Each year, more than 2,600 volunteers join forces with WTA and help maintain over 150 trails across Washington state. On National Trails Day, we will be fielding eight work parties. Some are already full, but we encourage you to sign up on these trails that need some TLC:

If you're busy this weekend, take a look at WTA's trail work schedule for our list of upcoming trail work opportunities. The schedule is filled out through June 24 right now.

National Trails Day is also a day to enjoy hiking in our beautiful state. Most campgrounds have opened for the season and trails that were under snow a month ago have started to melt out. You can get the latest on trail conditions by checking WTA's Trip Reports. More than 500 reports from the trail have been filed by fellow hikers during the month of May, detailing snow levels, wildflowers, water conditions and more. We have more than 120 from the past weekend alone!

Whatever you do this weekend, get out on the trail and take a bit of time to discover, learn about, and celebrate Washington's trail system. We are so very lucky.
