Dog Mountain Permits for 2023: Get 'Em While You Can
Permits for Dog Mountain in 2023 will be available soon. In addition to a parking pass, hikers will need a permit if they are visiting Dog Mountain Saturday or Sunday between April 23 - June 12 and on Memorial Day.
Permits for the popular trails on Dog Mountain and Augspurger Mountain will be available again for the 2023 hiking season starting March 1. They are required for anyone hiking here on Saturdays and Sundays between April 23 and June 12. They will also be required on Memorial Day (May 30).
Permits will be available online at recreation.gov beginning March 1. There are two ways to obtain them:
Take transit - ride the CAT bus to Dog Mountain. Columbia Area Transit (CAT) will be operating a shuttle from Stevenson on weekends between April 29 and June 19 and on Memorial Day. By riding the shuttle to the trailhead you will automatically get a day permit to hike on Dog Mountain. Shuttle parking, pick-up and drop-off will be located in the gravel parking lot at 518 Rock Creek Drive, Stevenson, WA.
The shuttle will run every 30 minutes from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The last departure from Stevenson will be at 1 p.m. and the last shuttle leaving the trailhead will be at 5 p.m. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Drive yourself - reserve a permit online. Anyone not taking the shuttle will need to reserve their permit online at recreation.gov. This method also requires a $1 non-refundable administrative fee (per person) as well as purchasing a parking pass ($5 per car). If you have a Northwest Forest Pass or interagency, senior, military, or Every Kid in a Park pass, they are accepted as alternate forms of payment. Discover Passes (which are for state lands) are not accepted.
In short, hikers driving to the trailhead will need a parking pass and a permit for the trail itself. Hikers taking transit only need the permit for the trail.
An additional batch of available permits will be released 3 days prior to each permit date at 7 a.m. (Wednesday for Saturday permits, and Thursday for permits for Sunday). The permit is only valid for the date reserved, and each person needs their own permit (including kids). Having a permit does not guarantee a parking space at Dog Mountain Trailhead.
