You Can Be an Assistant Crew Leader

Our assistant crew leaders make trail work parties possible — and you can be one of them.

If you’ve ever been on a trail work party with WTA, you know that without assistant crew leaders (ACLs), trail maintenance would not be possible. These literal rock stars keep work parties safe and organized, share their trail maintenance know-how and build close-knit communities one work party at a time. Assistant crew leaders are probably one of the reasons you came back after your first work party.

You can create the same experience for future volunteers by becoming an ACL. If you have familiarity with basic trail maintenance (25 work parties is a recommendation, but not a requirement!), have a desire to share your knowledge with other volunteers and are committed to creating inclusive spaces for everyone on trail, we encourage you to apply before Dec. 31, 2022.

If you’re on the fence about whether or not you’re ready, here’s the support you can expect from WTA.

    • Mentorship throughout the process. ACL applicants are often given leadership opportunities in the field prior to their application review to give them a chance to learn more about the role. If invited to become an ACL, new leaders can opt in to being paired with an experienced volunteer mentor for advice, training and other support throughout their first year.
    • Training to build leadership and technical skills. No one knows everything. In addition to an initial ACL orientation, we also offer trainings year round focused on leadership development, emergency response, wilderness first aid and technical skills like tread maintenance, building rock walls, using crosscut saws and more.
    • Community and continued conversations. Each spring, WTA hosts Crew Leader College, an annual training weekend where volunteers travel from across the state to gather together. Each region also holds regular roundtable discussions for regional updates, learning opportunities and chances to connect with other leaders.
