Evans Creek Puncheon by Tom Sauk

Overview

The City of Sammamish has acquired a new piece of property on the south side of Evans Creek Park where they envision a new trail corridor making a walkable neighborhood connection into the existing Park. Come help WTA make this new trail a reality!

About the Area

Evans Creek Preserve is old farm land that was purchased by the City of Sammamish to both protect the natural landscape and to provide people with recreational opportunities. The 179 acre site varies from nearly flat meadows to steep slopes. It includes a variety of habitats, including wetland, riparian and forested upland. In 2015 WTA constructed a trail up the ridge to a new parking lot. Fall of 2025, WTA will be constructing a new trail for a walkable neighborhood connection to the south end of the park from the Summer Ridge neighborhood.

What to Expect

We'll have fun, work hard and make a difference! No experience is necessary.

Project Description

We are building new trail which includes removing brush and heavy vegetations, digging down to mineral soil and build out the tread. Projects will include walking the flag line through heavy brush to clear the area, lots of dirt work, prep for bridge structures across creek drainages and possibly working alongside City Restoration volunteers to harvest plants and close off some user built trails.

Hiking Information

Expect to hike 2-3 miles over rolling terrain. Hike in down the newly completed stairs onto a user built trail system. WTA crews will be working off trail on our new trail construction walking over primitive ground conditions on a  heavily vegetated hillside. Sturdy boots are highly recommended. Be prepared for unstable footing conditions in loose soil and heavy brush on a steep slope throughout the work day.

Schedule

  • 8:30 AM: Gather as a crew and hike to the project site for safety briefing
  • Morning: Work at your own pace, and take breaks throughout the day
  • 12:00 PM: Lunch on the trail
  • Afternoon: Consider trying a new task before wrapping up the day's work
  • 3:00 PM: Carpool back to CWU
  • 3:30 PM: Sign out after enjoying refreshments at the CWU parking lot.

For safety reasons, arriving late or leaving early is not allowed
