Beware of: trail conditions

Icky weather=urban hiking! I normally wouldn't post a trip report for this one, but just wanted to let you know that part of the Coyote Trail is very flooded. There's no way to get around it unless you bring your own dinghy. We turned around, found another trail, and ended up back on the Coyote Trail. We hiked 5.35 miles going clockwise, then turned around and went back the same way. This is a great trail in rainy weather because there is a lot of tree cover! No crowds either and great trail signs. A new sign was finally added where people get confused at a fork in the trail.

A lovely Sunday morning at Bridle Trails State Park. We occasionally passed other runners or hikers, but despite the copious amount of horse excrement on the wide trail we only saw one pair of horse riders as we neared the end of the loop. Though the backyards of local residents and the sound of cars on the road are never far out of mind, the trails do cut through lush forest that look gorgeous in the sparkling sunlight and make it easy to forget you're so close to the city. No snow, and the path is well-maintained and has almost zero elevation. A word of caution: the trails are not particularly well-marked, so consult a trail map in advance. We set out to do the Coyote Loop, but ended up completing both it and the Raven Loop because we erroneously assumed we should stick to the perimeter.

Nice urban hike. Did 2.75 in the eastern half of the park. Some areas had a lot of ruts in the center of the trail (horses, mtn bikes?), but all in good working order. Nice variation in terrain and easy undulating elevation changes for someone like me, with creeky knees. McGee enjoyed it, too; all the smells and horse-shite.

Nice walk in the woods; not worth driving any great distance to get there.

  • Ripe berries

I hiked in from the power line trail across from Ben Franklin Elementary at about 9:30AM. LOTS of ripe Salmon Berries. It rained hard and I had many puddles to jump in. I entered the west section of the park and had to squat under a tree for a while to find relief from the rain. I saw about 5 other people on the trail this day. No horses. I covered about 5 miles in my Vibram 5 Fingers. I probably wouldn't ever go barefoot in this park because of all the horse manure. I hike this park several times during the week and never see many people. It's really a hidden gem.
