This is a nice place to see native Pacific Rhododendrons in bloom.  This lesser known trail is just west of Hwy 101 near Mt Walker (another great Rhody site).

The campground gate is closed and some logging activity has recently occurred around the campground.  The trail has a small upper loop with a view of the falls and a longer lower lolipop loop that descends into the canyon.  The canyon is very lush and green now.  The west side of the loop follows the Big Quilcene River

There is powerful cascade type waterfall on the Big Quilcene River 1.2 miles from 101 parking.  The trail continues for 1.5 miles then loops back.

The best Rhodies are actually on Hwy 101, 1/4 miles south of the Campground entrance at a big pull out.

2.5 miles RT (AllTrails tracing is not complete).  Also AllTrails doesn't have this trail on it's map.

This is also a good time to hike the Mt Walker trail. The trail is open and the road to the top is closed.

Beautiful short hike but a bit confusing. The trail starts at the closed sign for the Falls View Campground (Route gps to the Falls View Campground).  There’s a sign out front saying no foot traffic due to timber sale, but we still entered as there were 2 other cars parked.

Turn left as soon as you go past the road closure sign. Keep going until you hit a junction then turn right on the road. You’ll go past a bathroom on your right and then there’s a sign for the trail on your left. The trail sign says the trail is open even though the campground is closed. There’s a .1 mile loop to the falls or a 1.5 mile RT hike to the river/the falls.

Beware of: road conditions
  • Wildflowers blooming
  • Hiked with kids

You must park on the main road and walk through the closed campground. The hike down was short with some excellent views of the river rapids. The hike back up was a workout.

Getting to the falls was a great time. Even having to park by the road to walk the little extra. I had four kiddos with me from ages 3-12 all who liked the river and photo opportunities. It had rained the day before so the trail was kind of muddy, but my kids definitely found each spot of mud to get dirty in. This was one of three trails we were planning on doing and would have been a good one to start our day with but we had a very late start to the day and didn't get there until 2pm and still had great views, sunlight and not a lot of people. The write up says you can hear traffic when you get to the fork and are closer to the road, we only heard traffic once and it was a bunch of motorcycles cruising by. All in all it was a great first trail for my family to start their season off with.

Parked at the gate, hung the pass and started our journey.
Quick hike through (closed) campground to TH and down the hill. Lots of stairs. Easy to navigate. We managed to miss the waterfall and keep hiking on the trail.  Once we reached the bench we realized our mistake and backtracked.  But we enjoyed the longer hike through the woods.  The waterfall is located at the bottom of the hill. Then headed up, up, up the stairs and back to the Jeep!
