The first bit of this hike is through the tall dry grass. Lot's of moths and lizards to be seen. About 15 minutes in, you get some nice shade from tree cover along the mountainside and you can hear the distant rumble of flowing water. Thirty minutes (~1.2 miles) in there's a beautiful creek and small waterfall. You can carefully climb down to the creek and splash the cold water on your face to cool off (also a great picture moment). After the waterfall, the trail gets considerably steeper - proceed with caution - and winds deeper into the mountains (away from Lake Chelan). We didn't hike to a final destination but turned around when we came across a black bear about 1.6 miles in. Along with the bear, we saw some cat scat, dozens of chipmunks, and lots of songbirds along the trail. It was a beautiful sunny day hike and we'll definitely go again.

We turned up Shady Pass Rd from 25 Mile Creek State Park. We parked near the "North Fork 25 Mile Creek" sign along the dirt road (NF-5900), then hiked about 100 ft further up the road to the trailhead labeled "Lone Peak Trail".

The Chelan Ranger Station will give you a map of trails in this area. If you want solitude, you will find it here. Beautiful drive up the excellent forest road 5900. The trail starts in the sunshine and tall grass before it takes a right turn into the trees. I didn't make it very far when I found fresh bear scat and decided to go wake up my sleeping family back at camp. Really pretty area. Lots of damage from last years fires, but impressive to see trees still growing when they've been charred more than half way up. It's so different compared to the mossy, green trails I'm used to on the west side of the state. Lots of little red headed song birds, goldfinch, quail and other birds I wish I could identify.

Directions: From Chelan, take Hwy 97A south 4 miles to South Shore Rd. Continue West on South Shore past the 25-Mile Creek Campground, then turn left on Shady Pass Road [FS 5900]. Continue along this road, until you reach a sign saying to turn left for Lone Peak Trailhead. You will pass two trailheads for the North Fork 25-Mi Creek Trail. The Lone Peak trailhead is about another 5 miles after turning off 5900. Roads are in excellent condition and very well marked. The trail starts in dry brush and descends over the first mile to 25 Mile Creek. Very little shade in the first mile before you enter pine forest, so it was good that it was overcast while we hiked. We did not get all the way to Lone Peak, but saw no hikers during the entire outing. The hillsides opposite are beautiful and the creek delightful. No bugs on this well maintained trail. I would like to go back to make the summit and continue on. Some Thimbleberry near the creek.
