couldn't get there due to road conditions. boulders/pot holes, too much for our pickup truck. opted for Pete Lake instead.

This sounds like a beautiful hike but we opted out due to road conditions. The Cle Elum ranger we spoke to on Friday said that Forest Road 4330 is drivable but in poor condition. If you go, know that the dirt and rock road is washboarded and has many potholes. It would be a very slow 14 mile drive all the way to the trailhead, with or without a high clearance vehicle. So, make sure you have enough gas. Furthermore, a stream crosses the road just before the trailhead.

With the rainy weahter and not being able to get out this week I thought a trip down memory lane was in order. This is from 1998, things were much different for me back then. http://alpinelakesaficionad[…]ichael-lakes-8498-from.html

So I never actually made it to this trail head because the how you got their directions are wrong. The GPS coordinates are correct and if you use google maps to get directions to the trail head they take you to a different place. The directions here take to to the Salmon La Sac trail head which is pretty but you won't find the Squaw Lake trail head from there!
