We hiked the Kiwa Loop today because it was one of the last days of the year to do it. I took my two children and another family of four. We saw about 6 nutrias and one of them was white. We saw a bunch of bullfrogs at the start of the hike in the first slough crossing before the hike makes a T to loop. Because they are invasive, the kids tried catching some in their nets.

This is a beautiful hike with stunning views and tons of bird enthusiasts who shared views through their scopes. Thanks!

Lots of bees around the last blooming flowers and we did see one native tree frog.

My Mom and I made a pleasant July 4th morning of a walk in the Refuge along the Oaks to Wetlands Wildlife Trail (very well maintained) and continued on along the Gee Creek Exploration Trail (opens seasonally and is less maintained.)  Shortly from the parking area, there's a really interesting bridge that takes you over the railroad tracks and it's otherwise hard to believe that you are only a short distance from I-5!  We saw an eagle along the way, otherwise it was a quiet walk past the Cathlapotle Plankhouse and throughout the Refuge.  After our time in the Refuge, we headed to the Port of Ridgefield and dropped our kayaks for a paddle along the Lake River and saw the Refuge from the water!  Note: We didn't realize until we drove into Ridgefield that they have one of the largest 4th of July parades and events in Clark County.  Plan accordingly!

Kiwa loop was super easy and a nice detour off the auto tour. Tons of birds and bullfrogs serenading you will you take a stroll. The marshes off the boardwalk are teeming with frogs, tadpoles, butterflies, and dragonflies. Keep your eyes peeled for turtles.

Beware of: trail conditions

It was a warm and mostly sunny Sunday. Like many other Pacific Northwesterners, I was desperate to get out on a trail, but I did not have the courage to face the crowds in the Columbia Gorge. This was a good choice. The trail is short and was quite muddy in places. I did it twice to maximize miles. And I love big oak trees that look like they are poised to reach out and grab me, so I was happy. The trail was nowhere near crowded, also a bonus.
