Scatter Creek Trail to Scatter Creek Pass is abandoned, overgrown, faint and often completely obscured. But if you are confident in your routefinding abilities and have the ambition, this is a very rewarding destination with great scenery and views.

Drove to Salmon La Sac area and up road #4330 up 10 miles to Lake Tacquala past Scatter Creek. The road was in the worst condition I have ever seen. One mile before the end of the road and Hyas Lake trail head we saw a traffic cone in the middle of the road and a huge mud hole. Impassable for even my large 4 x 4 3/4 ton truck. I nearly got stuck 2 years ago in that same area after a fall hike. It needs to be fixed! Why can't the forest service do this simple job?

We turned back and hike a mile up the Scatter Creek Trail #1328. Good day hike, but we need to get this road issue resolved. So many great hikes up this road, Deep lake, Cathedral Pass, PCT, Hyas Lake, Marmot Lake, Tuck & Robins, to name a few. Please make efforts to find a solution to these ongoing issues of neglect - this was not the way it was 40 years ago, rather just the opposite. Our State and Forrest Service paved the way for some of greatest hiking in the N.W. - and they maintained our rec areas with a great deal of care and support. If you can help - call the proper authority's or let's fix the road through WTA...Help

GPS coordinates for the South Scatter Creek trailhead (No 1328) are N47.30.383 W121.03.547. The trailhead is about 0.2 miles south of where the road fords Scatter Creek and is signed, but not obvious. There is a gravel parking area with room for 3-4 vehicles on the west side of the road about 50-100 meters north of the trailhead. Since Kitya's May 15, 2016 report, the Scatter Creek Trail #1328 has been cleared of all dead fall as far as its intersection with Trail 1226.2. Beyond that, after the 2nd stream crossing, I lost the trail which seemed to peter out into game trails as previously described by emulous on September 19, 2015. I also walked out the 1st section of Trail 1226.2 southeast to the 1st place it crosses a fork of Scatter Creek. Although a horse had recently taken that trail, it appears to be seldom used with grass and vegetation starting to replace the dirt track. However, with attention, it could still be followed at least as far as I walked it.

This is more of a road report, since I didn't actually make it anywhere. Snow starts on the road FS 4330 about a mile before Scatter creek. Some higher clearance vehicles can drive over it, but not my corolla, so I decided to stop and walk the road. I'm glad I did, because just a few minutes later I have encountered a couple of high clearance trucks stuck. Scatter creek trail seems to be not too obvious even in the best of conditions and it is a bit of a mess now. It starts being basically a shallow lake, all lower part of the trail is under water from the snowmelt. Than it is a mess of blowdowns on top of blowdowns. Solid snow after about a mile. I've walked up only about 1.5 miles/1200 feet gain and gave up.

Like the last submitter, this is really mostly a road/conditions report. My wife and I intended to camp overnight at Scatter Creek campground and do some day hiking in the area. We also saw the 4 or so vehicles trying to help out someone who got stuck. We waited, but it became apparent it was going to take a while longer, so we decided to turn back and camp closer to camp creek. The landscape is gorgeous and we had great weather. We got our tent pitched and started making camp. Then the gunfire started. It was annoying, but we figured that we'd sit it out at least an hour and see if the hillbillies would get bored. They didn't. The dog wouldn't stop shaking. I understand it's legal to carry in NF land, but c'mon guys. If you want to shoot that much, go to a freaking gun range. We decided, eventually, to just give up and go home. The constant sound of rapid fire shooting, either from someone really trigger happy or a weapon on full auto made it impossible to enjoy the beauty of this place. There's also not, in my mind, the option of going to ask them to chill out; they're armed, probably drinking, and within their rights to do that on NF land. We won't be going back anytime soon.
