Like the last submitter, this is really mostly a road/conditions report. My wife and I intended to camp overnight at Scatter Creek campground and do some day hiking in the area. We also saw the 4 or so vehicles trying to help out someone who got stuck. We waited, but it became apparent it was going to take a while longer, so we decided to turn back and camp closer to camp creek.
The landscape is gorgeous and we had great weather. We got our tent pitched and started making camp. Then the gunfire started. It was annoying, but we figured that we'd sit it out at least an hour and see if the hillbillies would get bored. They didn't. The dog wouldn't stop shaking. I understand it's legal to carry in NF land, but c'mon guys. If you want to shoot that much, go to a freaking gun range. We decided, eventually, to just give up and go home. The constant sound of rapid fire shooting, either from someone really trigger happy or a weapon on full auto made it impossible to enjoy the beauty of this place. There's also not, in my mind, the option of going to ask them to chill out; they're armed, probably drinking, and within their rights to do that on NF land. We won't be going back anytime soon.
