Started at Little Mountain Park in Mount Vernon. Good choice if you need to be reachable by cell. Trails are in great shape. I recommend taking a picture of the map at the trailhead or printing one from home. Woods smell sweet after the rain. Beautiful views from the top.
Couldn’t leave the area without checking out the birds at Wylie Slough. I found myself once again narrating a National Geographic special. First I saw a red tailed hawk eating a snow goose. When I returned to the scene, the hawk was gone and a BIG black bird, maybe a vulture, was flying away with the carcass. As soon as he made it to the trees, two bald eagles circled the field, unsuccessfull in their search for the goose. This was just one of my jackpots today.
I had the Slough trail to myself. It sprinkled a little but the birds don’t seem to mind. I was zoomed in trying to capture pictures of eagle number one when eagle number two flew in to get in the shot. I had to say thank you to Mother Nature for this second jackpot of the day.
Quiet except for the birds, trains in the distance and sprinkle of raindrops.

First off, the lower gate was not open on a Saturday, so there are only three official parking spots at the lower gate, and a few others along the road. We were looking for the old car and the safe on the Bonnie and Clyde trail, and ended up going Up Only to the upper parking area, the Ridge trail almost back to the road and finally Bonnie and Clyde to the car. The main trails are mostly well marked, but a lot of the crossovers are unmarked and we missed a few shortcuts because of this. Trail conditions were mostly excellent, though it was a bit hard to find the trail in places on Up only.
Overall this is an excellent trail system, but it's much harder to use when the gates aren't open.
