Ethan, Brenda, Jonah, & I set off for Frenchman Coulee today.  On the way we stopped at the Wild Horses Monument and climbed up to the sculptures.  None of us had stopped here before & we were quite impressed despite the graffiti.  We then went on to Frenchman Coulee.  We parked at the head of the coulee and took the old wagon road that traverses down to the base of the waterfall.  We had never been this way before, so it gave us a new perspective of the coulee.  From here we walked west along the base of the north wall to a room-sized boulder where we had lunch.  After an hour or so we climbed off the boulder and walked another 1/2 mile or so west and then retraced our steps back to the car.  We saw a few yellow bells and buttercups and heard a canyon wren - spring may finally be here!  There weren't other hikers where we were, but we saw lots of other groups walking up the main trail to the waterfall enjoying this sunny, warm, beautiful day.

Since I had time to kill after Ancient Lakes and not wanting to sit in rush hour traffic we stopped at Frenchman to see the sunset. Instead of heading to the waterfall we took a left at the fork in the road and headed the other way. From what I understand this trail goes all the way to Ancient Lakes. About 12 miles is what I’m told. Not too much to add other than the golden Hour is beautiful against the rocks. My dog loves it here. He starts howling out the window when we turn into the park. Bigfoot made his second appearance of the day here.

It was a beautiful hike today! As previous hikers have noted, the parking lot is easy to miss as there are a couple different parking areas on the road that leads down to the recreation area, but the one we used to hike back to the waterfall is the small gravel lot on the right side of the road- you will pass the waterfall as you drive down the road and then essential back track on your hike. Beautiful views of the Coulee and we only saw one other party.

Dodged the overcast day in Seattle to head to blue sky, sunshine and warmth. The weather did not disappoint. My dog and hiked to the waterfall. This is a no elevation gain hike but the views of the rocks are amazing. The history in the making of the Coulee is fascinating. In the area where there are 2 rocks that used to be for climbing is a rock wall that the people who lived there made. I wish I had more info on that but the person who knows this is not available. Hopefully next trip report I’ll have the facts. Lots of animal tracks and my dog even brought me an ear. Yuck! My bass women came with me. They are on the wall. I’ll be back. There is more to explore out in the Coulee.

Reached the lower trailhead between 11am and noon. There were at least a dozen cars there, but there was still plenty of space to park along the road.

Followed the trail to the waterfall. Continued a bit further to get better views down the coulee, and turned around after reaching the upper trailhead.

Parts of the trail were a bit sandy, and we had to hop over the stream below the waterfall, but didn't have any other issues with the trail.

Encountered only 3 parties on the trail (incl one on bikes), so most people must have followed another trail somewhere...
