The road to the trail head was filled with potholes requiring careful and slow driving. This said and followed, it was an easy access to a wonderful, short day hike. The day was warm & sunny, with just enough shade during the morning hours of our hike to be comfortable, and relatively "bug-free". The trail was snow-free, except for a few patches near the top, old look-out site. The views were stunning with 360 mountain peaks. The wild flowers were magnificent, and having a hiking member who really knows the flowers made it even more special.

The trail is 99% melted out, with just a few snow patches near the summit. Otherwise, it's dry and out in meadows the whole the way, so bring water and sunscreen. No bugs today, but saw 1 pika and 1 marmot. Very popular hike - lots of families, lots of dogs. Step for step, this might have the best reward to effort ratio in the Cascades. Fantastic views right from the parking lot. Could see all the way past Rainier to Hood and the Sisters in Oregon. Amazing. Great wildflowers.

Watch out for those potholes- They start right where you turn onto the sauk mountain road from Hwy 20, so try to go about 5 mph (or slower, if you can) as you turn off Hwy 20. I bottomed out a couple of times because the potholes were hard to see in the shadows, started leaking transmission fluid, and had to turn around.

Still quite a bit of Snow on the east& north sides of the mountain, once you get beyond the switchbacks. Trail was loaded with hikers today, probably about 100 others seen on the trail. The summit itself is free of snow. First mile of road to trailhead has serious chuckholes. Fabulous views, as always!!

The road from the Highway has many large potholes to test your suspension. Use caution unless you have a serious 4X4. NO SNOW ON ROAD.The mountain was socked in when we arrived at trailhead. Cold and mostly dry hike ahead except for inside the sparse areas of trees. It had snowed a bit the night before and melting slush rained down from the trees. We reached the pass and the weather started impoving. Clearing and magnificent views awaited us. A marmont greeted us as we enjoyed the snowfields and the view of Sauk Lake below. We spent some time exploring the many peaks and after awhile descended. We hiked in tennis shoes and no major equipment was needed by us. A 14 yr old, 16 yr old and 49 yr old man made it...so can you
