The road is rough, large rocks and potholes. We managed fine in a Toyota Venza (a crossover) with modest clearance, we were surprised to see a few sedans at the trailhead. We took it slow, 30 minutes to travel the 4.5 miles. Google Maps has the correct location.

Great hike and the main trail was in good shape. We hiked to the first three lakes turning around at the Lower Ashland Lake campground. On the way in we hiked on the northern side of Upper Ashland Lake, on the way back we took the southern trail. The southern trail is in rough shape and at one point we lost the trail. The trail connects back to the main trail on the east side of Upper Ashland at a downed tree making it hard to see the southern trail coming from the east.

Got to trailhead around 0915 on a weekday. No other cars encountered along FS roads or at the trailhead. Road in is tougher than it has been in the past, if there is another heavy rain it will only get worse. Made it up to the trailhead in about 25 mins from the Mountain Loop in our 4Runner, but wouldn’t recommend anything smaller or lower to do the same. Slow going for sure, but well worth the time.

Water level at Beaver Plant Lake was the highest we’ve seen it, couldn’t get to the boardwalks or the picnic bench. Campsites look to have recently been spruced up with new fire rings and some more established camping areas. Would love to overnight here if we had more time.

Encountered only one couple on our way back to the cars at the trailhead, overall very quiet and a great way to reset the gears. Would recommend this hike, but please make sure you have a capable vehicle, and some patience to get there.

Tried to do this hike today with a friend and literally could not make it the trail head. The road is a MESS. it’s literally as if there was an isolated meteor show on the road. I drive a smaller SUV, and am very confident in my driving ability and felt it was too dangerous to take on. Unless you have a vehicle with the ability to off-road I would not recommend prioritizing this trail

We only encountered a few other groups hiking. Perfect day to hike, just the right temperature. My 6 year old ran nearly the whole trail. We will probably try and go again and make it an overnight. The road was rough coming in, which is one of the reasons we chose the hike (hoping for fewer people). We always pack garbage bags when we hike to pick up trash as we go, I was impressed we couldn’t find anything to pick up.
