The road is rough, large rocks and potholes. We managed fine in a Toyota Venza (a crossover) with modest clearance, we were surprised to see a few sedans at the trailhead. We took it slow, 30 minutes to travel the 4.5 miles. Google Maps has the correct location.
Great hike and the main trail was in good shape. We hiked to the first three lakes turning around at the Lower Ashland Lake campground. On the way in we hiked on the northern side of Upper Ashland Lake, on the way back we took the southern trail. The southern trail is in rough shape and at one point we lost the trail. The trail connects back to the main trail on the east side of Upper Ashland at a downed tree making it hard to see the southern trail coming from the east.
