Beware of: trail conditions

This was an overnight hike over Easy Pass from Highway 20 down to Fisher Camp and back out.

The trail is in generally good condition, but I was glad I brought along my hiking poles to deal with some of the sections.  On the decent to Fisher Camp there are areas where you do not want to step off the trail as it a ways down.

The last water before Easy Pass, late season, is where you rock hop across Granite Creek. I assume that crossing could require wading earlier in the season.

The blueberries and mountain ashes had put on their fall colors, but the larches had yet to change.  The first snow of the season had fallen the night before which I feel will trigger the larches to drop their sap and start to change.

Arrived at the parking lot at 11 AM on a Thursday morning and found three vacant spots, plus however many cars can park along the shoulder leading in. Had the pass to myself both going up in the afternoon and coming back down the following morning.

Not as spectacular as Maple Pass or Cascade Pass, but much less crowded.

Took me about 2 hours up to Easy Pass with a full pack. One hour up from Fisher Camp.

Note that Gaia has mismarked (how surprising!) the location of Fisher Camp. Fisher Camp is another 1/4 mile further down the trail and is marked with a sign by the trail.

Fisher Camp is not a destination campground, but is the closest campground to Easy Pass. My campsite did however have a very curious ermine that was fascinated by my tent, sniffing at in the evening, and was using it as a trampoline at dawn.

The 1 1/4 mile / 1500 foot elevation difference has a better tread and an easier gradient than the trail up from Highway 20. Also, you have Fisher Peak staring at you the whole time. In my estimation, the views are much nicer on the Fisher Creek side of the pass.

Not. Twenty somethings with long strong legs will have no problem with this hike, but we're the hiking grandmas and this for the rest of you. Don't be lulled by the easy uphill at the beginning, the hard part starts about mile 2 and gets harder after the last stream crossing and as you break out into the first open spots. The flowers are pretty much gone in this lower section, but the views are just beginning. The trail alternates between woods and the open rocky slope, all steep. You gain 3000' getting to the pass, and a lot of it is on rocks and scree. It was slow going for this old gal, I felt like I was hiking and hiking and never getting anywhere! As you climb, there are more flowers and views. The columbine are mostly gone, but there's swaths of regular and alpine fireweed, arnica and pearly everlasting. We could hear the whistling of marmots and the squeak of picas and ground squirrels on the rocks. I could also see the people that had passed me waaay up on the scree, they looked so tiny and far away, yikes will I ever get there? I was too darn tired to take pictures of the alpine flowers as I got higher up, but there were the showy seedheads of mtn anemone, yellow coralbells, veronica, partridge foot and (gotta love the name) dirty socks. Once at the pass (finally), the views are 360 outstanding, Fisher Creek Valley, over to Fisher Peak, Black Peak behind it, and Mt Logan looking east. West is Mesahchie Peak and a bunch of other ones. I think we could see Snowking Mtn toward the west, but my map didn't go that far. Check out the larch here, green now, but this would make a great larch hike for faster hikers than me. Now about going down, I went down in the same gear as going up, granny gear. It's just as hard as going up, but in a different way. I was the slowest hiker by far of anyone we met, but I'm old and ornery and not inclined to give up, this is too pretty a hike! So hey not to brag or anything, 9 hrs car to car! HAHA Seriously, this is a beautiful, but tough hike, much less popular than the others nearby, so if a 72 yr old can do it, you can too! Map says 3.9 miles to the pass, we got over 4. FYI We left Everett 500, ran into road construction detour on 530 by Arlington, detour at Smokey Point exit, then more road construction just outside of Darrington, flagger with pilot car. On trail by 815, so plan on 3+hr drive.  Loo at TH, also Newhalem and Diablo Lake overlook if you drank too much coffee. We got burger at Mondos, I turned over the car keys to one of the grandmas and had a beer. If you would like to help me raise funds for hikeathon:

The Easy Pass trail is a little gem in this part of the North Cascades, never seeming to draw crowds, but more than equal to the more popular (and often overrun) local options.  The trail is in good shape, though vegetation in the middle section is beginning to get thick.  There are also two good options for the mid-trail creek crossing.  The out-and-back to the pass is around 7.5 miles with 3,000 feet of elevation gain on a very consistent 15% grade.  All the snow up top has melted, and wildflowers are still going strong, particularly the columbines in the lower scree sections. At the pass, views of Mount Logan, Black Peak, and others in the area are awesome!

Trail is in fantastic condition! No snow left to cross and just one creek where plies would be helpful. No bugs. The pass is spectacular. Worth the effort

Trail is in great shape all the way through Fisher camp. Slick logs over one crossing, but water level is manageable. One small patch of snow melting out toward the top of the pass. Makes for a skinny trail for about 10 yards.
TH facilities were due for service when I arrived. Some surface shitter opted for just west of the established facility, not far from the picnic bench. Sad!
