The research lab in which I volunteer had an annual hike to Tolmie Peak Lookout this past Tuesday, August 20, 2013. We arrived around 10-11am, and our group contained at least one person with minimal hiking experience and little general physical conditioning. We found the trail easy enough for everyone in our group, and the payoffs were outstanding.
Mowich Lake was impressively clear and blue on our right as we entered the woods. After approximately 1-2 miles of hiking with light-moderate elevation gain, we reached Eunice Lake. Wildflowers were nearby, the old Fire Lookout was visible atop the peak across the lake, and the water was more blue and clear than any water I've seen outdoors. We swam briefly, then continued .9 mi uphill to the lookout. The view from the lookout was excellent, including Mt. Rainier and Eunice Lake. A panoramic photo taken by one of my labmates, attached, captures the view well.
This hike probably has the highest payoff/effort ratio of any hike I've done. There were some bugs, and staying hydrated was necessary, but other than that there were no challenging conditions.
