Not too much new to add from previous reports. The trail is super hard to follow and very over grown. There is a maze of trails many of which lead to a dead end in the bushes. Yes, definitely wear your long pants if you feel like bush-waking. You can see signs of beavers and a couple dams along the creek. I didn’t see any wildlife however. The bridge is unique and the river is perfect for kayaking which is what we ended up doing. FYI: There is a sign posted that the bridge will be closed in October for repairs....hopefully they fix up the trail during that time too.

We made the mistake of wearing shorts and short sleeves on this one. The trail is in a beautiful area, but it is overgrown and hard to follow.

Although we watched a half dozen others turn around pretty early on, we thought we would tough it out and get farther. We didn’t.

We followed the directions on the main trail description but about 1.2 miles in gave up and turned around.

The trail starts in a great recreation area for the Yakima River so bring your cooler and rafts. Don’t forget to bring a $5 bill because passes aren’t honored here. Bring a pen too to fill out your permit.

The trail is worth checking out, but don’t forget your long hiking pants and trailblazing spirit.

Beautiful area, we hiked up a couple hills and saw a beautiful view of the surrounding area - including the river. Mosquitoes were terrible, but mostly because its the height of their season. We tubed down the river (I would suggest it for nearly everyone) and enjoyed the sun.

Took 2 other 16 years olds and I about 2 hours to go 2.5 miles because of the confusing side trails, that lead you into thick brush. We saw herons, lizards, snakes (one rattle snake), a tick, a big wild bird and its offspring, and some small crawfish and fish. After setting up our tents, we climbed 500 feet up a nearby ridge to get a better view of the valley. While in camp, the mosquitoes were annoying, so bring something to deal with them. I would recommend using gps to know when to cross the creek. I made a map on caltopo.com, and downloaded it onto Avenza maps on my iPhone. You will not need to take off shoes to cross the stream. All of the red dots on the picture of my map are potential campsites. When we pulled into the parking lot we were scolded and threatened a ticket for going over 10 mph, so watch out for that.

After setting up camp at Big Pines CG in Yakima Canyon, we drove to the Umtanum Recreation Area to hike Umtanum Creek Canyon. The small CG was full with 106 students from  Explorer West Middle School and their leaders. They had arrived today and were to be in the area until Friday. They divided into small groups to hike.  One group came to Big Pines CG the next morning to pick up trash. The area where we normally cross the creek had fallen brush and small limbs which we couldn't go under or over so we stayed on the South side of the creek the whole time which meant we went through many brushy areas, but fortunately did not find any ticks. A few sticky geranium, pearly everlasting, monkey flowers and some white shrubs and flowers we couldn't identify were still blooming. Mosquitoes were a nuisance! We saw one lazuli bunting, two cedar waxwings and heard but never saw many yellow-breasted chats. Having been unable to hike in May, it was good to be on the trail again!
