Got to the bottom road at about 930, parked along the side of the road. There were about 7 cars already there. Heading up the forest road at this time it was pretty shaded, followed the arrows easily. Starting early is definitely a must on a sunny day, it was chilly and windy when we started but I could see how hot this hike can get.

Got to the trailhead for hex, it started steep and stayed that way. Beautiful views all the way up, wildflowers, and hummingbirds. Got to the top and only shared it with a few people. There were a couple motocross bikers on the trail today. Had lunch and headed down.

I definitely didn’t realize how steep it was going up as I was coming down. I’m pregnant so glad I brought poles in my backpack to use on the way down. I’d suggest if you aren’t too stable, poles can help on the way down. The sun was definitely intense on the way down on the FR, as I mentioned before, doing this hike early is beneficial.

Great hike.

The trail conditions refer to Sasse Ridge. Hex Mountain is in good condition, snow free, and relatively easy to navigate. There are some wrong turns you can take on some of the forest roads near the beginning, but most are marked with arrows someone made out of sticks. Or you can use Gaia or similar and have an easy time of it.

Going up to Hex: straight forward, fairly steep, some wildflowers, nice views at the top. I've done this before as a snowshoe and it was interesting to see it all dry. I saw an interesting rainbow cloud from the summit, nice mountain views, also several hummingbirds, woodpeckers, and chipmunks.

Originally I wanted to make a long hike of it, summit Hex and then take Sasse Ridge to Sasse Mountain. But in the end I didn't get that far. Finding the Sasse Ridge turnoff from Hex was easy enough, but the trail is SO overgrown as to be non-existent in places and I was just taking too long consulting Gaia and trying to find the least plant damaging way forward.. Since it's a ridge walk, it's not THAT hard to navigate, I just wasn't making good time and I kind of lost my shpadoinkle and turned back after a couple miles. I could have gone further, but I doubt I would have made it to Sasse Mountain at the rate I was going. Next time I'll start earlier.

Arrived at the trailhead at 7:30 and was the second car. Light snow/rain from last night kept the dust down, which was nice. Some wildflowers along the way including Trillium. A male sooty grouse was drumming his heart out about a mile in (listen for a low  - surprise when he found me. The trail is marked with stick arrows which help in a few places - would be nice if more sturdy signage could be put in. On the way down passed about 20 hikers.

This is such a lovely hike. The sticks that form arrows totally guide you to the right way. We happened to have an overcast day but it was still incredible. I can imagine that the views would be incredible on a clear day.

Some wildflowers are blooming but I bet in another 2 weeks it will be incredible.

Steady incline, Nice lake view along the way, there are limited parking spots near the trail head. It was very windy the last mile, the view at the top is spectacular!
