Craig Romano in his book, "Day Hiking Columbia River Gorge", states that this is "one of the most spectacular trails in America" and we totally agree with him! One can hike 6.25 miles to Twister Falls for a beautiful day hike passing 6 waterfalls or backpack 13.5 miles to Wahtum Lake. Today we had time to hike only 3 miles which is OK, too, as the trail along Eagle Creek Canyon is beautiful the entire way! There were many "seasonal" waterfalls. The first part of the trail was muddy with sections that had broken pieces of ice that had fallen onto the trail from the cliffs above. This section was short and easily traveled. As always many people were enjoying the trail. We took the short spur trail to Lower Punch Bowl Falls viewpoint, but there was too much water to walk around the corner to view the falls. One needed waders to go in the creek to view the falls.

  • Hiked with a dog

Traveled to Eagle Creek from Auburn,wa. It's definitely become one of our favorite hikes. The trail was well maintained and lots of beautiful scenery. This was definitely a more popular Trail head lots of other hikers, it did seem to clear up after Punch Bowl Falls. Definitely children and dog friendly trail. My husband and I have done lots of hikes with our 2 dobey's,each trail we have done, has been pets on leash but were able to let our Dobie's run free as other hikers would also do with their pets, but as for Eagle Creek this was not the case, our boys needed to be leashed up the entire time, except for when we went down to the falls, smaller dogs where off leash but I wouldn't recommend for bigger dogs only cause how congested the trail was and at some points the trail was quit narrow with steep cliffs. We will definitely be doing this hike again, only next time we will camp.... A lot of amazing camping for hikers!

Everyone says pictures can't capture this hike, and they are right. But that didn't stop us from trying! For anyone who wants to do this as a backpack, there are so many options. Many little spots along the way that I didn't know about. But we car camped at the campground up the street, and practically had the whole place to ourselves both nights! Even the Friday! After camping at Columbia Hills CG we packed up early and headed over to the OR side for some waterfalls. This trail is popular and we now know why. Wildflowers are out! Tons of Chocolate lilies & shooting stars! A whole wall of shooting stars! We made it to Loowit falls and turned back, weather was coming in and we had 4+ hour drive to go. Glad we were able to see so many beautiful flowers, & falls, just a gorgeous area right now. There were alot of people on the trail.

Beware of: trail conditions
  • Wildflowers blooming

Weather was sunny with scattered showers, perfect day for a waterfall hike! Trail was in good condition with muddy areas and water runoff. There is a small tree down at the Blue Grouse Campsite, but it's easy to step over. Trilliam are starting to bloom along with other wildflowers. All the falls are at thier peak due to snow melt and weather... Very beautiful! ^_^
