Eagle Creek — Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015

Southwest Washington > Columbia River Gorge - OR
Bridge near beginning of the trail
Craig Romano in his book, "Day Hiking Columbia River Gorge", states that this is "one of the most spectacular trails in America" and we totally agree with him! One can hike 6.25 miles to Twister Falls for a beautiful day hike passing 6 waterfalls or backpack 13.5 miles to Wahtum Lake. Today we had time to hike only 3 miles which is OK, too, as the trail along Eagle Creek Canyon is beautiful the entire way! There were many "seasonal" waterfalls. The first part of the trail was muddy with sections that had broken pieces of ice that had fallen onto the trail from the cliffs above. This section was short and easily traveled. As always many people were enjoying the trail. We took the short spur trail to Lower Punch Bowl Falls viewpoint, but there was too much water to walk around the corner to view the falls. One needed waders to go in the creek to view the falls.
Cable along a narrow portion of the trail
Metlako Falls in the fog
Prettiest of the "seasonal" falls
