Beware of: snow, trail conditions

A detailed report was posted two days ago, so I'm just posting to supplement since we went farther the previous poster. Mud was surprisingly not an issue, but all of the log climbs and root scrambles are very slick in the rain. Where the trail reaches thick brush (apparently right before a large log crossing around the 2 mile mark), a snowfield is covering the trail, presumably as far as the river. Footprints heading into the snowfield are visible, and we had spikes on hand, but we really didn't feel like struggling through the brush in the snow. From where we stopped, the waterfall is visible, and we felt satisfied with what we completed of the trail. Trail was snow-free until that point.

Road: Road was in really good condition to the TH (two larger potholes in the last 100 meters to the trailhead as your turn off the main FS RD, but if you have high clearance, you should be fine). If you're in low clearance, you can just pull off at the pullout right on the main road.

Trail: Trail was very rocky, rooty, and wet in places. The obvious trees down across the trail, but all of them are easy to walk over/around or obvious notches have been made into the logs for easy climbing over. Still, given the wetness and side slope angles on this trail, take care so you don't slip and fall.

O boy was it green out there! The ferns and moss were really popping on trail today. No signs of flowers blooming yet, but the brilliant greens of the understory made up for it.

I didn't quite reach the end of the trail due to time constraints, but the few miles I did were still really beautiful.

A nice trail, pretty forests, biggest huckleberries I've ever seen. No more strenuous than you're average I-90 hike, some one had been through with clippers recently and we had no issues following the trail at any point,  we also had no issues with wasps.    Not many places along the trail for the kiddos to take a break.  Not much for views, nice gravel creek at the top.   But our dog was stoked to get a decent hike in, and in the middle of labor day weekend we saw three people.  I wish we had a little more time to explore the upper valley.

!WARNING! There is a wasp nest at a downed tree about a mile in. With 30 or so wasps. we turned around to prevent dogs from getting stung. I still did managed to get stung myself though. You have to go over the trees roots to go through on the trail. I couldn't tell you what the rest looked like, however the first half was pretty well maintained.

Perfect day for a deep canyon hike. This one is a workout. The first mile is fairly easy going, although persistently uphill. The second mile is a little rootier and rockier, with more blowdown. Most of the large logs have been cut, but there are still a few in the way and require a maneuver to pass. The section just before the long foot log over the creek is very brushy.

The trail does resume on the other side. Follow the path straight, then right to the camp site. The long log next to the fire pit will lead you to into bramble, but there is a path on the ground at its tip. The brush is bad, but soon the path works up the hill and is more visible. It ends by a nice, flat valley bottom with gravel bars and pools. Eight elk went tromping away when I arrived.
