What a gem saved from logging by the concerned citizens of Index, friends and generous donors. The parking lot gates were open providing ample space for several cars. The kiosk was a delight to read what led up for a new trail to hike in the Cascades.  The trail was a delight to travel on and interestingly tenth of a mile flags marked my progress all the way to the viewpoint. The trail ambled through second growth forest with intermittent switchbacks to gain elevation. The trail leveled out at 1.1 mile as it traversed the upper ridge crossing an old logging road and under power lines to a nice viewpoint of Mt Index, bridal veil falls, Mt Persis and Barclay Mountain. This hike would be nice in early spring when snow blankets Mt Index. I'll let you know!

We arrived at the trailhead around 9 and were the only car. The trail is well maintained, although we did encounter a newly fallen trees across the path about halfway up. It was pretty easy to get around though. Our GPS said the total distance was 4.6 miles, not the 3.5 the trail description stated, but the elevation gain was accurate at 720 ft or so. The day was overcast with even a very light rain, keeping the trail cool and bugs away. Clouds obstructed most of the views but overall it's a really nice trail. Be careful on the way down though, some of the sandy, steep sections required careful footing.

Great light-moderate day hike! Gorgeous views for a 1.5 mile investment.

The main lot is currently closed, however parking was still available. This is a hike that is truly beautiful from start to finish- the first mile or so brings you through Rocky second-growth forest with occasion old growth trees. The peak 2/3 mile section of trail winds through beautiful new-growth (Aspen?) and wildflowers, stopping at a stunning viewpoint. The hike is only marred by the sound of logging camps to the west of the peak, and power lines that cross the peak.

Parking was gated and locked but there was enough room for a few cars off the road. Trail was in great condition. What there is for uphill is done in the first half of the hike. Great view from the lookout.
