Beautiful trail. Lots of shade. Mountain views. Some rough parts with trees to climb over and mud wallows to step across. Creeks are running high so be sure footed or call it a day. Made it all the way to the other trailhead and just beyond to lunch at the river. Bugs are just starting to bite. The toilet is about 5 minutes before the trailhead. Clean and stocked. Parking is limited.

Beware of: trail conditions

My first hike in over a year and a half after having 2024 wiped out by knee surgeries. I had been here last in March 2023 and knew it was a good choice, with little elevation gain and soft tread.

The road off Mountain Loop has some potholes but they are easily driven around. There is a toilet at the boat launch but none at the trailhead.

The trail is in good shape, although I only went about 3 1/2 miles in. Trail is flat as it heads towards the river; it then makes a left turn with views down to the White Chuck and up to mountains. Parallel high above the river for a bit before a gentle descent into the valley with one last mountain view directly ahead.

Cross a nice bridge and then just wind through the lush foliage with a few ups and downs. There are some brushy spots beginning about 2 miles in but nothing major. Multiple stream crossings where I preferred to step directly into the shallow spots versus rock hopping due to "shy knee." Those with fully healthy limbs should have no problem.

A good early season hike while waiting for the snow to melt higher up.

Beautiful trail that’s always on our spring hiking list. The trail is mostly dry with a few small creek crossings—perfect for pups, and ours had a blast. There’s a nice view about half a mile in of some North Cascades peaks, but after that, it’s all peaceful forest. Spring is alive out there, with trillium blooming all along the trail.

WTA lists this as a 5-mile hike, but we logged 7. The trail goes much deeper into the wilderness than listed on WTA.

Great any type of weather hike but I'm glad the clouds played nice because the views were stunning! Flowers and mushrooms are starting to come out. We did 4 miles, then turned around and in that potion the trail is in great condition, very smooth tread, a few shorty brushy areas, ~2 water crossings which involve some rock hopping it you want to stay dry, and one small spot where the side of the trail is eroded but there is plenty of room still.

Road/Parking: The dirt road is only ~3/4 mile but it was quite bad by the boat launch with some really big holes. With 6.9 inches of clearance on our car we were fine, but worst case you could park at the boat launch and walk a little extra. No toilet at the TH but there is a big TH sign and parking for about 8+. 3ish on a nice Saturday we were the 4th car and the only one there when we left around 5.

Trail: The tread work on this one was great and most of the trail was pretty flat. Almost no mud despite being mud season, lots of little streams and mini-waterfalls. The big view is less than a mile in and is stunning! The ground is undercut so stay clear of the edge.

The forest felt magical today with everything carpeted in lush moss and new growth poking up everywhere. Bird song and the sound of water filled the air. The tree leaves are starting but they haven't filled in yet so the views are still unobstructed. There is a cute bridge a little over a mile in. Lots of trilliums and salmonberry flowering and other. We saw a bunch of funky looking false morales a couple of miles in. Nice place for a casual hike.

Stats: ~8 miles, 500 ft elevations gain/loss, 2.75 hours. We are fast/moderate paced hikers who hike weekly.

A nice winter hike along the White Chuck River. I stopped at the viewpoint that looks down on a bend of the river with mountain peaks in the background, Sloan was the only one I can identify. I went on to Black Oak Creek and the footbridge there. The creek is flowing well and there are lots of interesting ice formations on branches hanging over the water. During the hike I saw three other people and three dogs.

The trail is in great condition. It is frozen solid enough that my boots didn't pick up anything, they were as clean at the end as when I began. The access road (FR-22) is in good condition. There are a few pot holes on the lower section that can be avoided or gone over slowly. Any vehicle can make it through. The toilets at the parking lot at the confluence of the Sauk and White Chuck are open.
