Trip Report

White Chuck Bench — Saturday, Apr. 19, 2025

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway
View a little less than a mile in

Great any type of weather hike but I'm glad the clouds played nice because the views were stunning! Flowers and mushrooms are starting to come out. We did 4 miles, then turned around and in that potion the trail is in great condition, very smooth tread, a few shorty brushy areas, ~2 water crossings which involve some rock hopping it you want to stay dry, and one small spot where the side of the trail is eroded but there is plenty of room still.

Road/Parking: The dirt road is only ~3/4 mile but it was quite bad by the boat launch with some really big holes. With 6.9 inches of clearance on our car we were fine, but worst case you could park at the boat launch and walk a little extra. No toilet at the TH but there is a big TH sign and parking for about 8+. 3ish on a nice Saturday we were the 4th car and the only one there when we left around 5.

Trail: The tread work on this one was great and most of the trail was pretty flat. Almost no mud despite being mud season, lots of little streams and mini-waterfalls. The big view is less than a mile in and is stunning! The ground is undercut so stay clear of the edge.

The forest felt magical today with everything carpeted in lush moss and new growth poking up everywhere. Bird song and the sound of water filled the air. The tree leaves are starting but they haven't filled in yet so the views are still unobstructed. There is a cute bridge a little over a mile in. Lots of trilliums and salmonberry flowering and other. We saw a bunch of funky looking false morales a couple of miles in. Nice place for a casual hike.

Stats: ~8 miles, 500 ft elevations gain/loss, 2.75 hours. We are fast/moderate paced hikers who hike weekly.
