We hiked to Big Hump and passed another WTA work crew - thanks! No problems or complaints driving the road. Trail in great condition. Clear day and we could see the Cascades from Snack Rock (glad to have brought the binoculars). The trail up near Big Hump has a bit of shrubbery encroachment - not so much that you would ever miss the trail - and wish I'd brought some tools to cut it back a bit. The views down the valley are nice.

Our group hiked the Duckabush River trail today.  The road is open.  WTA should remove its warning to the contrary.

The Mt Jupiter Fire (2620 fire) on the east end of the Mt. Jupiter Ridge has grown from 4 acres last night to 150 acres as of about 2pm on the 15th.  Under a 8mph NE breeze, the smoke has settled far up the Duckabush watershed and into the national forest.  The fire appears to have started at the east edge of that clear cut near the access road (or non-access, as you will) and has probably grown uphill and to the west.  This afternoon there's a stage 2 (ready to go) warning for residents of Duckabush road, and a caution to everyone else to stay away.  The view from Port Orchard is that the entire area is clouded w/ smoke, including the Dosewallips.

I've added a link to watchduty's coverage below.

Another great trail crew adventure.  It was an early morning start to make it out the door at 4:30, barely making the 6:15 ferry sailing at 6:07!

We had a large group, so we spread out across three sections.  I started one of the closer project sites, putting in check steps and replacing a few that were deteriorated.  After we moved to a new area, I was clearing dirt around a root when I stirred up a hornet's nest (I'm sure my wife would say that's not surprising!).  We moved on to replacing another check step, then the leader and I hiked out to the far crew and helped there where they are putting in a rock wall.

Everybody was great and we had fun.  I'd heard about trail crew leader Charlie's cookies all day and wasn't disappointed when we met back at the trailhead.  I had a snickerdoodle and a gingersnap, and they were totally worth it!  Too bad this is her last season.

To make this trip a little more worthwhile I'm staying at the same airbnb in Brinnon as I did in March so I can hike tomorrow.  It's such a quiet and unique location, in close proximity to many trails, and beautiful Rocky Brook Falls is close by.  Great amenities if you don't mind a dry cabin.  There's a link below to the webpage.
