A beautiful Sunset hike on Whidbey Island. I was not motivated to get up this morning and drive very far so I chose to wait until just before Sunset to hike out on Ebey's Landing and try and get a nice sunset and I was not disappointed.

This trail is about 3.25 miles long and starts at the parking lot and then heading North up the hill on to the Bluff Trail. It is a loop trail so you can do the beach first if you like. Just watch for the tides. I was trying to get up high on the bluff to set up my video camera for a sunset. This hike is up and down along the bluff but once you get down past Perego's Lagoon hike downhill to the beach and hike the beach back to the parking lot. If you try a sunset hike make sure you have a head lamp because you might need it if you wait more then and hour after sunset. There is no light out here to guide you.

Checkout the video of this by clicking on the link below or checkout some of my other 400 hikes of Washington State on my VIMEO Channel at https://vimeo.com/mikemorrison.

I know the video is long so if you do not want to spend that much time once you get to the beginning of the sunset scroll to the last 3 minutes and checkout the beautiful Sunset Colors.

As always get out and see this beautiful state and enjoy your hiking!!

Take Care,

Mike

I heard report of whales passing by Whidbey Island on Friday, so I knew I’d have to make my way there over the weekend.
We started just south of Fort Casey SP where my friend’s husband spotted the whales. No whales, but we did see dozens of people fishing along the beach and in the short time we were there, we heard hoots and hollers from a number of people reeling in salmon.
We headed over to the SP and enjoyed lunch on the bluff with excellent vantage point for whale watching. We spotted a harbor seal but no whales.
Next stop was Ebey’s Landing. We stayed on the beach, which is always a good choice for rock hounds. We saw a huge sea lion. Actually, it looked bigger than any sea lion I’ve ever seen but I can’t think of what else it could be.
Our last stop was Rosario Head at Deception Pass SP. just a beautiful walk in the park but no whales today.
I was amazed that it wasn’t too crowded today. For a holiday weekend, we didn’t have any trouble with parking or crowds.

Very enjoyable weekend getaway, exploring central/south Whidbey, based out of Fort Ebey campground

Fort Ebey State Park:

  • Really nice campground, small compared to it's much larger brother north at Deception Pass
  • Nice private sites, and great for families
  • Bluff provides great sunsets
  • Beach is quick drive, or 15-25min walk, down at Partridge Point
    • No partridges spotted sadly
  • Beach walking is great northward, little more bouldery southward
  • Barely scratched the surface of the Fort Ebey / Kettles complex of trails ( walking and mtn biking )

Ebey's Landing:

  • Bluff trail is stunning for it's sea views, and views down to Perego's Lake
  • Return via beach
  • Will do again
  • Kudos to the Nature Conservancy, State Parks, et. al., for preserving this gem

Fort Casey:

  • Giant playground for kids and adults alike on the old batteries
  • Nicely done interpretive signs throughout highlight the history
  • Great views directly down to the Port Townsend ferry, and the Keystone Spit ( fun scuba diving btw )
  • Beach Access at SW corner, and W central

South Whidbey State Park:

  • Nice forest walking through this small park
  • Campground appears abandoned ( at least this year )
  • Beach access currently closed due to stair damage

Pro Tips:

  • Good ice-cream, at Kapaw's Iskreme, in historic Coupeville
  • If closed, Caio Food & Wine has Gelato, up the hill on Main St.
  • If you want to see Orcas, keep an eye open when you notice the Whale Watching boats stopped :)

Lots more parks we simply didn't have time to explore.

Beautiful walk with fantastic views of Puget sound/Salish sea waters. Gorgeous weather with some wind at the cliff. We started from the Ebey's landing reserve parking lot right past cemetery on Prairie Ridge Trail. Walk a half mile in prairie/meadow past Ebey house ( was closed) and first view of beach and bluff are seen at Prairie ridge trail - Bluff loop connection. We traced our steps back after the view but you can continue to loop back on Bluff loop trail. A must-do stroll if you are in the area!!

Puget Sound and Islands > Whidbey Island

We started at about 7:45 pm on Saturday night to catch the sunset. It was the perfect day for it. It was pretty windy, so no bugs. We went up and back instead of completing the loop as it got dark. Only a couple other groups on the trail, some folks on the beach. Peaceful.
