Boulder River #734 — Dec. 21, 2001

Joe, Bill and I walked the Boulder River Trail on Saturday 12/22, partially as a recon to see how many trees are down. There are plenty. Most of them are beyond the 2.5 mile mark. After that point it looks like a war zone. There are probably 25 trees in all. Most of them are 12-24 inches in diameter but the associated debris makes getting through them difficult. Additionally, there have been two slides this year. One, shortly after the Wilderness Boundary, has been repaired and the other, a big rock just after the falls viewpoint has not. The recon was only one reason for going. The other is that this is a marvellous trail. It's one of the few winter back country walks in western Washington. The old growth beyond the falls view is specatcular and when you hit a beautiful day like we did, the low sun through the green is a sight to behold.

Beware of: trail conditions

Sign to road is down. Access road is not bad at all, some potholes. Trail is overgrown, especially the last two miles. Count on being wet if it has been raining. One foot bridge broken but traversable. Beautiful hike, two waterfalls and great rock in places for bouldering. Campsites are nice, we saw four one of which is huge. Some mosquitoes, but not the worst I've seen. Well worth it. A good trip.

Access road has quite a few potholes. Trail is in very good shape except that it is getting quite overgrown in places (hint, hint). Boulder River and the waterfalls are still quite nice, even in this low-water summer. There are a few bugs but not too bad.

What a great little trail! Easy to get to and a lovely hike through the woods. The trail climbs up and down at a nice easy pace.We took a lot of the side trails down to the river for the best views of the Waterfalls. We turned around where a walk-way/bridge was crushed from a downed tree. We must have been at almost 4 miles but never having been on that trail I am not sure. We could have climbed around the blow-downs but decided it was getting late and the hike back was just as nice the old growth and waterfalls on this hike are to be enjoyed..

Beware of: trail conditions

Sporatically decided to go hike the Boulder River trail to Feature Show Falls (I needed a new picture). There are a pair of blown down trees over the trail, no less than 5 feet off the ground, so no problems with blocking the path. Still pretty muddy in places. I also tromped down to Boulder Falls (the falls on the River, not coming into the river, as most misinterprete). There's a very faint trail about 1/2 mile from the trailhead that leads steeply down to the river. Not an impressive waterfall (more like a big boulder garden), but nice.
