Note that the vault toilet mentioned in the directions was closed with notice saying it was full.  I would plan on that being the case and use facilities in Arlington/Darrington.  Though the tree mentioned in the other trip reports hasn't been fully removed on the access road, it is no problem to navigate.

The river and waterfalls are gorgeous.  The trail was in good shape, with the usual few muddy spots mentioned in the description (easy to navigate through/around).  We passed a bunch of small family groups, but it wasn't crowded and we could make a bit of space for ourselves.  Expect company at the waterfalls and view points.

Just a heads up--today we attempted to do this Boulder River hike but the NF 2010 road was blocked by an excavator taking down a tree and root ball on the side of the road. They may have finished the job by now but in case not, you'll need a Plan B hike.

The construction guys recommended we go the White Horse Shell food mart on the way to Darrington, where they have a nice map of trails, and also a nice little book of trails, both free. Using these we decided to do the Old Sauk River hike, which was a nice easy riverside ramble. Happy trails!

**NOTE** The vault toilet on French Creek road is CLOSED.

The trail had a number of wildflowers blooming, and great spots to view waterfalls and river rapids. There is quite a bit of variety on this hike - we'll definitely do it again.

Beware of: bugs, road & trail conditions

Beautiful cloudy day to hike along the river. The trail past the falls was a bit brushy and quite buggy at times! Remember your insect repellent and consider a bug net.

Hiked to the twin falls with my sister on Friday for a picnic. It's the third time we've done this within the last 5 years and it was a beautiful day for it. The many large potholes on the road to the trailhead would deter some vehicles but my old Subaru had no trouble going around, straddling them--and sometimes driving through them (unintentionally). But the road is beautiful, lined with tangled branches of many tall moss covered trees, their springtime chartreuse green leaves dazzling with the sunlight coming between them. You can hear the river rushing below though you can't really see it unless you get out of the car. As usual, we enjoyed the variety of foliage, delicate ferns and tiny white flowers along the trail. We've never hiked any further than the tall twin falls that appear on the right about a mile in (I still don't know the name of them!) as it's so spectacular to sit on one of river boulders, contemplating and admiring them while eating lunch. Definitely a good hike for taking out of town visitors or the family. It's also is a good warm up for more challenging hikes, at least for two old ladies. There were just a handful of mosquitos, only noticeable when we stopped but not bothersome.
