Just a heads up--today we attempted to do this Boulder River hike but the NF 2010 road was blocked by an excavator taking down a tree and root ball on the side of the road. They may have finished the job by now but in case not, you'll need a Plan B hike.
The construction guys recommended we go the White Horse Shell food mart on the way to Darrington, where they have a nice map of trails, and also a nice little book of trails, both free. Using these we decided to do the Old Sauk River hike, which was a nice easy riverside ramble. Happy trails!
