I got a late start in the morning stepping off just after 830 and there were already 20~ cars in the parking lot on a Tuesday. You don't get much of a warm up as the climb starts maybe 200feet from the parking lot. There are a few small streams in the first mile and a few benches further up that you can rest on. The top gets very rocky, stay to the right for the trail. I rested just under Haystack Rock which although it looks possible to climb, I opted not to.

It’s the trail that never ends. You hike, hike and hike. You imagine, the end just to be fooled into climbing more switchbacks. This is a challenging hike that takes you through a majestic forest, but as you hit that last mile, you’re over it. Granted I was carrying 50lbs for training. Once at the top make the scramble up the rocks and take in the views. We hiked late, always make sure you have a light. Coming down in the dark, the roots and rocks were jumping out, trying to keep us on the mountain.

I got on this hike by accident. I’m visiting from Ohio. My friend who lives here is an avid hiker. We hiked the Green Mountain near Bremerton a week ago because it has a nice view of downtown Seattle at the summit. This week we decided to hike the Little Si because it’s similar in difficulty rating. We took the option to check out the Boulder Garden Loop but made the wrong turn at some point. The switch back is relentless and the steepness never ceases. We found out we were on Mt Si trail from a sign near the summit. But we continued to the summit. The scramble to the Haystack is definitely not for everyone. My experience from rock climbing allowed me to feel confident going up and down-climbing it. A fall from near the top can be fatal. However I’m glad we did this and the views from the summit is breathtaking. On our way down I got separated from my friend because she decided to run. I took the wrong turn and ended up at Mt Si’s parking lot. Fortunately, a really nice fella gave me a ride back to Little Si’s parking lot. We started the hike at 12:30pm and returned to our car at 5:10pm even with all the silly mistakes.
