Wow! This was my first trip to the summit of Mt. Townsend and I was very impressed. I enjoyed 360 degrees of awesome views! (Even with some clouds and haze in the sky today. I can only imagine what it would be like on a clear day!) The snow is essentially gone from the trail and, it looks like there will soon be rhody's in bloom and some wild strawberries to eat. Lots of pretty phlox in bloom now. It was very windy on top, don't forget to bring warm clothes or a jacket if you want to linger for lunch on the summit. No bugs today. Only a couple of minor blowdown to climb over or under. Seems to be a fairly popular trail - not for solitude seekers - at least on the weekend.

Several fellow hikers performed trail maintenance on the Little Quilcene trail and up to Mount Townsend via the north side ridge. Easy access to trailhead, no snow. Several blowdowns along the trail were cleared. Some snow on trail. Only gaiters needed if preferred. No washouts. One or two blowdowns and rootballs cause you to step off the trail. Rootballs left alone. Full trip report, photos, and video can be viewed at http://mikeshikes.blogspot.com/ Mike

I hiked up on Sunday June 15. Most of the snow present in the vicinity of Camp Windy that was reported on June 1 has diminished to patches of slushy stuff. Trail-finding is not difficult now. Only a couple of small blowdowns to hop over. The heather is blooming at the summit. Smells really nice up there.

Beware of: snow conditions

Road to upper trailead is open with some snow still in parking lot. We started hiking Sunday around 11:00am in a light mist with temp around 45 deg. The first mile and a half is basically free of snow with a couple trees across the trail. The next mile and a half up to and around Windy Camp has a fair amount of snow on the ground; in places still three to four feet but trail is easy to find. Between Windy Camp and Silver Lake trail cutoff, trail is harder to find because people have plunged off in several directions trying to find the trail. A short ways past the Silver Lake cutoff, the trail is open up to the summit ridge with one snowny area a couple hundred feet below the summit ridge. The summit ridge itself is free of snow. In classic Mt. Townsend fashion, fog and mist swirled over the ridge with blue sky and the sun breaking through at times. Nice to get warm before heading back down into the mist. Miko

General comment: a glorious day in a beautiful location. Weather: fog and mist until about 500' before the summit and then BLUE SKY with almost no clouds; it was quite warm in the abundant sun. Trail conditions: a few logs over the trail. Companions: Amy, Ish, & Sally.
