Hiked hex mountain starting from the Sasse Mountain trailhead up FR 4305-118.

the road to the trailhead was very good. A few potholes as you climbed higher but not that big of a deal vs most gravel roads. Once on the 118 spur things got narrow but the road itself was fine. The hairpin turn would be hard without AWD because it is steep. The only issue is that the shrubs are encroaching on the road. Bring some loppers and help keep this road open!

We hiked up the trail to hex mountain and then beyond to the NW peak at 5157’. Had to go cross country the last 200’ or so to get to a very nice rocky spot to take a break and see great views up the Cle Elum River valley. It helps me to scout next weeks hike to see where the snow levels are!

This hike is open and exposed!  No shade although there are still some living firs and pines after the Jolly mountain fire.  Definitely start the hike early to avoid the hot sun!  Spring and fall are best.

There are lots of flowers now and the Ceanothus is about to bloom and it is everywhere!  It will be beautiful in a week.  Views in all directions keep it interesting the entire way!  Per Gaia we hiked 9 miles and 2500’ for the day. We saw three deer, lots of birds, chipmunks, and one lizard. No people!

This trail is open to motorbikes but we didn’t see and and were thankful they had already cut any fallen logs. Overall a great hike.

Started at 7:45am as the first car at the pull out near Newport creek. There were 11 additional cars when we got back at noon.

There are many logs along the trail but it's passable and they prevent motorcycles from getting the idea that this trail is an option for them. We did encounter a few of them at the summit.

Poles were useful as the sandy trail is quite slippery on the way down. Although it got pretty hot today (close to 80F), multiple layers were welcome at the top and in fact as soon as we got to the ridge as the wind is strong and fresh. Full pants are also advisable because the trail is a bit overgrown and some of the bushes have thorns.

There were many flowers but I only realized how many on the way down while contemplating the views of Cle Elum Lake and Tahoma in the background.

All in all, a great hike.

The trail gets a little confusing a little shy of a mile in – starting from Salmon La Sac road the description here says follow the road and ignore turnoffs, but that lead me to Hex Mountain Road. You're looking for the yellow gate.

There were some blowdowns close to the top and some trees to cross but mostly the trail was nice! Wildflowers were out and no snow.

Parked off the road outside of the Private Property gate, staying on the road until coming up to a yellow gate to continue onward. downloading the map/route off of AllTrails was helpful for this trail, as it is easy in certain areas to miss the trail in some sections or even the "start" of the Hex Mtn trail. I made a Cairn , hoping it'll help future hikers 😘

This was a very quiet trail, only saw two sets of hikers in my 4 hour round trip! the trail is overgrown in some sections, but not too bad, and there are a LOT of downed trees on the trail. they were all manageable to cross over/ around, but this trail could use a little TLC for sure. Saw an adolescent white tailed deer on the trail, and had beautiful views from the top. wildflowers are in full bloom and it was completely snow free. it's a hard hike, but it was worth the effort.

Another wonderful Spring hike up Hex Mountain.  The views always great.  I saw white-tail deer, turkeys, and no people :-)  A little snow near the top, otherwise already very dry.

I walked up Newport Creek Drive but, as others have mentioned, there's a new gate and private property sign so next time I will go the NF-4305 route.
