Empty trailhead on a grey Wednesday afternoon. Very flat and easy hike which is serene and mossy. Only issue is that about 3/4 of the way in the trail has been washed away into the river. Spend as much time as you can near beaver lake. Gorgeous.

Reached the parking lot shortly before 9am, and was pleasantly surprised to have the trail to myself for the duration of my hike. Bleeding hearts are blooming, the trail was only a little muddy in places, and the roaring river made for a lovely backdrop to this easy hike. There are a few spots on the trail which would require a little scramble or assist for kiddos or those with shorter legs. Otherwise, the trail is in great condition and a good hike for all ages.

We hiked this trail back in March when there were many trees down on the trail. Since then, someone has done a lot of great work on the trail, clearing trees and working on the little stream crossings. This has been one of my favorite early and late season trails, and now it is one of my favorite old dog trails, now that we need to find some easier trails for my elderly dog. The trail along the first river bend has a bit of a scramble down to the sunken trail, but it isn't too bad, and the trail is better there than it was a year ago. Everything was so bright and green, with beautiful early spring flowers in bloom. The hummingbirds were loud all along the trail, and they were especially busy near the beaver ponds. We saw a pair of mergansers in the river. This trail is such a lovely walk!

We took a family hike on a beautiful sunny day. The trail is in great condition, with a few muddy spots that weren't too deep. The kids ended up with muddy shoes, but not muddy clothes. The bleeding hearts are blooming everywhere, and are gorgeous. A number of other small wildflowers are also blooming. I was fascinated to see that the river has changed courses where the trail dead-ends. There is still a small flow there, but the main course of the river has moved much farther away. The trailhead has an excellent outhouse, which was in great condition. (Makes things easy when hiking with young kids.)

With the wet and cold spring most of the hiking I have been doing is at Chuckanut Drive, Whidbey, Camano, and Little Mountain near Mount Vernon. Today I decided to venture into the mountains to check out the conditions. Arrived at the trailhead at 10:30am and there were only 2 other vehicles. The part of the trail that had erosion issues by the river was in better shape than the last time I hiked this, kudos to whoever worked on this. Only ran into 2 groups of hikers going in and 2 families when I was hiking back, this is a great, easy, family friendly trail. I was surprised by the lack of people on such a nice Sunday. This is an easy spring hike and spring was in full bloom with nice weather, blooming flowers, butterfly's, and blooming skunk cabbage. It was nice to get into the mountains again and the trail was in great shape. Also saw new signs on Mount Loop Hwy showing which forest roads led to trailheads. A great hike to start the season.
