The forest service road to the Mt Townsend upper trailhead is mostly paved and in pretty good shape. The trailhead has a vault toilet.

Any wild water on the way up has pretty much dried so if you were hoping to fill up using a filter along the way it would be very challenging.

Our party (a group of generally active folks that hike a couple times a month) took approximately 5 hours to complete the hike, which included time spent eating lunch at the summit.

Trail is in very good condition. This hike is a steady climb to the peak with an elevation gain of 3000’. You are in the forest for 2 miles before breaking out into more open terrain with fantastic views. The views become better with each step until the peak is reached at 4 miles. A slight right turn off the main trail takes you up to Mount Townsend which is a short trek to the peak without much additional climbing. From Mt. Townsend you can continue to the north peak which is visible and not much further- about .5 mile. When we reached the north peak my garmin registered 4.5 miles. If you stay on the lower trail without going to Mt. Townsend you would reach the North Peak in a slightly shorter distance on a trail with better footing. The views are GRAND off of both peaks.
We did this hike on a Wednesday and arrived at the trailhead at 9:30. It’s a small parking lot, but there were only 4 cars when we arrived. There were very few people on the trail for our entire hike- probably encountered 10 hikers the whole day. The road up is mostly paved but narrow with the last .75 mile turning to gravel and narrow. This was a wonderful hike on a beautiful sunny day.

Beware of: road conditions

Started at 7am. We were the 4th car in the parking lot. There were 16 when we reached our car back around 11am.

The road to the trailhead is bumpy. Beware that the directions from Google maps are wrong when coming from Port Angeles. It tried to get us through some small mountain roads that were closed physically. Though if you look further on the map, then you can eventually find the proper path reasonably easily.

The trail itself was quite nice. The first mile is the steepest. Then you end up translating through moss and bearded trees until you reach a trail split.

We started to be exposed to the sun only from the Buckhorn wilderness. There, we saw two grooses (ptarmigans?) crossing the trail.
And then you have a wonderful view in most directions.

We met a few people who camped near the top for sunrise but the majority of people we crossed were on our way down. Beautiful hike!

Hiked from the upper Townsend TH, traversed the ridge to the Silver Lakes trail after summiting, and overnighted at the lake with a side trek up to the ridge above. All trails are in tip-top condition, even the unofficial ones, just note that the proper path up to the ridge leaves from the campsites high on the east side of the lake. You can head straight up from the meadow like I did, but it turns into a hard, steep scramble and it doesn't have to be that way. Anyhow, views were spectacular everywhere and I would've liked to take more time up on the ridge, but my canine companion was over it, so down we went.
It was a full house of campers at the lake, as one would expect for a warm Labor Day weekend, but not so crowded that anyone was truly piled on top of one another; I arrived around 1pm and had zero issues getting a nice spot. Otherwise, nice to see a few lingering wildflowers on the shoreline and bugs were buzzing, but not really biting. Didn't really see any wildlife, but I did spy a few bats circling in the morning, so that was cool.
One last note: water is getting scarce and both the pond at Camp Windy and Silver Lake like to kick up a lot of silt, so your best, easy-access refilling source is Silver Creek before the lake.

Started from the Little Quilcene TH on the lung-buster route at 8:15, first at the lot. It was still slightly damp from previous weekend rains so there was less dust on the road and trail. Few blooms but plenty of fungi. Very clear day with a little haze at the peak. On the way down I passed about 5 groups and there were about 7 cars when I finished about noon. Very enjoyable morning hike.
