Trip Report

Umtanum Ridge Crest — Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2020

Central Washington > Yakima

As the last trail report states, the trail is muddy and slippery. I normally don't even bring poles but I had them in my bag and used them on my way down.

I stated the hike at 0800 (overslept 45 mins) made it to the top shortly after 0900, and headed back down at 0915. By around 0930 to 0945 the muddy areas with sun exposure had began melting making it slick. I had times where I was sliding w both feet planted trying to use poles to control my descent even. It's obvious lots of people are walking off the trail to avoid the mud, don't do this it's not ok.

If your doing this hike anytime soon try to start at or before sunrise to maximize the time where he mud is frozen and causes no issues.
