Today I had to try out my new ride, a 2020 Crosstrek, so Soaringeagle and I headed up for a little hike in the N Cascades. If you tested 'Forest' on the WTA What trail are you? game, this is your hike! Magnificent trees! Giant root balls from fallen magnificent trees and cheerful little spring blooming wildflowers under magnificent trees. Ceder, Big Dougs, and hemlocks, plus some amazing old multitrunked bigleaf maples are all here and then throw in a pretty little waterfall and cute bridge with a nice bench for lunch. We took the Evergreen loop, which skirts the perameter of the park and gives you a nice little bit of up and down. The trail is in good shape, but watch for the nettles! Be sure and add the section across the road the Sauk Springs trail, that takes you past the 500 yr old Grandmother Ceder. We got to talking to the ranger about the Skagit/Sauk reach trail from the Steelhead Park, and found out that was the old RR before #20 went in, and it eventually goes to the Sauk Valley general store. There also used to be an old gravel road nearby that was there before #20 went in in 1972. I remember this road and going up there with my family to see how far the hwy had been built. New we have a nice paved road for my new car! We saw a few people on the trail, but the ranger said on the weekend it was quite popular, restrooms are open.
